DesOwen Lotion

Pronunciation: DES-oh-nide
Generic Name: Desonide
Brand Name: Examples include DesOwen and LoKara

DesOwen Lotion is used for:

Treating mild to moderate itching, redness, and swelling caused by certain skin conditions.

DesOwen Lotion is a topical corticosteroid. It works by reducing skin inflammation (redness, swelling, itching, and irritation).

Do NOT use DesOwen Lotion if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in DesOwen Lotion

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using DesOwen Lotion:

Some medical conditions may interact with DesOwen Lotion. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

  • if you have any kind of skin infection, cuts, scrapes, or lessened blood flow to your skin

  • if you have measles, tuberculosis (TB), chicken pox, or shingles, a positive TB skin test, or if you have recently had a vaccination

  • if you are taking an oral corticosteroid (eg, prednisone)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with DesOwen Lotion. Because little, if any, of DesOwen Lotion is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

Ask your health care provider if DesOwen Lotion may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use DesOwen Lotion:

Use DesOwen Lotion as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Shake well before each use.

  • Apply a small amount of DesOwen Lotion to the affected area(s). Gently rub the medicine in until it is evenly distributed.

  • Wash your hands immediately after applying DesOwen Lotion, unless your hands are part of the treated area.

  • Do not cover the treated area(s) with bandages or other dressings unless advised to do so by your health care provider.

  • If you miss a dose of DesOwen Lotion, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use DesOwen Lotion.

Important safety information:

  • DesOwen Lotion is for external use only. Do not get it in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you get it any of these areas, rinse right away with cool tap water.

  • Do NOT use more than the recommended dose or use for longer than 2 weeks without checking with your doctor.

  • If your symptoms do not get better within 2 weeks or if they get worse, check with your doctor.

  • Talk with your doctor before you use any other medicines or cleansers on your skin.

  • Do not apply DesOwen Lotion over large areas of the body, to open wounds, or to scraped, infected, or burned skin without first checking with your doctor.

  • Do not use DesOwen Lotion for other skin conditions at a later time.

  • Overuse of topical products may worsen your condition.

  • If DesOwen Lotion was prescribed to treat the diaper area, avoid using tight-fitting undergarments or plastic pants.

  • Check with your doctor before you receive any vaccine while you are using DesOwen Lotion.

  • DesOwen Lotion has a corticosteroid in it. Before you start any new medicine, check the label to see if it has a corticosteroid in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take DesOwen Lotion before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

  • Contact your doctor if you have a cut or sore that does not heal.

  • Serious side effects may occur if too much of DesOwen Lotion is absorbed through the skin. This may be more likely to occur if you use DesOwen Lotion over a larger area of the body. It may also be more likely if you wrap or bandage the area after you apply DesOwen Lotion. The risk is greater in children. Do not use more than the prescribed dose. Contact your doctor right away if you develop unusual weight gain (especially in the face), muscle weakness, increased thirst or urination, confusion, unusual drowsiness, severe or persistent headache, or vision changes. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.

  • DesOwen Lotion should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 3 months old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

  • Corticosteroids may affect growth rate in CHILDREN and teenagers in some cases. They may need regular growth checks while they use DesOwen Lotion.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using DesOwen Lotion while you are pregnant. It is not known if DesOwen Lotion is found in breast milk after topical use. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use DesOwen Lotion, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of DesOwen Lotion:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Mild, temporary stinging or burning when first applied.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); acne-like rash; inflamed hair follicles; inflammation around the mouth; severe or persistent burning, irritation, redness, or swelling of the skin; thinning, softening, or discoloration of the skin.

This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your health care provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. To report side effects to the appropriate agency, please read the Guide to Reporting Problems to FDA.

Benz-O-Sthetic

Generic Name: benzocaine topical (BENZ oh kane TOP ik al)

Brand Names: Americaine, Americaine Hemorrhoidal, Anacaine, Anbesol Gel, Anbesol Liquid, Babee Teething Lotion, Benzo-O-Stetic, Boil Ease Pain Relieving, Cepacol Extra Strength, Cepacol Fizzlers, Dent-O-Kain, Dermoplast, Detane, Hurricaine, Lanacane, Maintain, Medicone Maximum Strength, Num-Zit, Numzident, Orabase, Orabase Gel-B, Orajel, Orajel Denture, Oral Pain Relief, OraMagic Plus, Outgro Pain Relief, Retre-Gel, Rid-A-Pain, Skeeter Stik, Solarcaine Aerosol, Sting-Kill, Topex, Trocaine, Vagisil Feminine Cream, zilactin-B

What is Benz-O-Sthetic (benzocaine topical)?

Benzocaine is a local anesthetic (numbing medication). It works by blocking nerve signals in your body.

Benzocaine topical is used to reduce pain or discomfort caused by minor skin irritations, sore throat, sunburn, teething pain, vaginal or rectal irritation, ingrown toenails, hemorrhoids, and many other sources of minor pain on a surface of the body. Benzocaine is also used to numb the skin or surfaces inside the mouth, nose, throat, vagina, or rectum to lessen the pain of inserting a medical instrument such as a tube or speculum.

There are many brands and forms of benzocaine topical available and not all brands are listed on this leaflet.

Benzocaine topical may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about Benz-O-Sthetic (benzocaine topical)?

There are many brands and forms of benzocaine topical available and not all brands are listed on this leaflet.

Benzocaine topical used in the mouth or throat may cause a life-threatening condition in which the amount of oxygen in your blood stream becomes dangerously low. This condition is called methemoglobinemia (met-HEEM-oh glo-bin-EE-mee-a) and it may occur after only one use of benzocaine or after several uses.

Signs and symptoms of methemoglobinemia may occur within minutes or up to 2 hours after using benzocaine topical in the mouth or throat. GET EMERGENCY MEDICAL HELP IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS: headache, tired feeling, confusion, fast heart rate, and feeling light-headed or short of breath, with a pale, blue, or gray appearance of your skin, lips, or fingernails.

Do not use benzocaine topical if you have ever had methemoglobinemia in the past. Do not use this medicine on a child younger than 2 years old without medical advice. An overdose of numbing medications can cause fatal side effects if too much of the medicine is absorbed through your skin and into your blood. This is more likely to occur when using a numbing medicine without the advice of a medical doctor (such as during a cosmetic procedure like laser hair removal). Overdose symptoms may include uneven heartbeats, seizure (convulsions), coma, slowed breathing, or respiratory failure (breathing stops).

Use the smallest amount of this medication needed to numb the skin or relieve pain. Do not use large amounts of benzocaine topical, or cover treated skin areas with a bandage or plastic wrap without medical advice. Be aware that many cosmetic procedures are performed without a medical doctor present.

Your body may absorb more of this medication if you use too much, if you apply it over large skin areas, or if you apply heat, bandages, or plastic wrap to treated skin areas. Skin that is cut or irritated may also absorb more topical medication than healthy skin.

Before using benzocaine topical, tell your doctor if you have any type of inherited enzyme deficiency, heart disease, a breathing disorder such as asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema, or if you smoke.

If you are treating a sore throat, call your doctor if the pain is severe or lasts longer than 2 days, especially if you also develop a fever, headache, skin rash, swelling, nausea, vomiting, cough, or breathing problems.

What should I discuss with my health care provider before using Benz-O-Sthetic (benzocaine topical)?

Do not use benzocaine topical if you have ever had methemoglobinemia in the past.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have:

  • asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, or other breathing disorder;

  • heart disease;

  • a personal or family history of methemoglobinemia, or any genetic (inherited) enzyme deficiency; or

  • if you smoke.

FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether benzocaine topical will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.. It is not known whether benzocaine topical passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not use this medicine on a child younger than 2 years old without medical advice.

How should I use Benz-O-Sthetic (benzocaine topical)?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Your body may absorb more of this medication if you use too much, if you apply it over large skin areas, or if you apply heat, bandages, or plastic wrap to treated skin areas. Skin that is cut or irritated may also absorb more topical medication than healthy skin.

Use the smallest amount of medicine needed to numb the skin or relieve pain. Do not use large amounts of benzocaine topical, or cover treated skin areas with a bandage or plastic wrap without medical advice. Be aware that many cosmetic procedures are performed without a medical doctor present.

This medication comes with instructions for safe and effective application. Follow these directions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

To treat minor skin conditions, apply a thin layer of benzocaine topical to the affected area up to 4 times per day. If using the spray, hold the container 6 to 12 inches away from the skin. Do not spray this medication onto your face. Spray it instead on your hands and then rub it onto the face, avoiding contact with your eyes.

To treat hemorrhoids, clean the area with soap and water before applying benzocaine topical. Apply the medication up to 6 times per day. If you are using the rectal suppository, try to empty your bowel and bladder before inserting the suppository. Remove the outer wrapper from the suppository before inserting it. Avoid handling the suppository too long or it will melt in your hands.

Do not use benzocaine topical to treat large skin areas or deep puncture wounds. Avoid using the medicine on skin that is raw or blistered, such as a severe burn or abrasion.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse within the first 7 days of using benzocaine topical. Also call your doctor if your symptoms had cleared up but then came back.

If you are treating a sore throat, call your doctor if the pain is severe or lasts longer than 2 days, especially if you also develop a fever, headache, skin rash, swelling, nausea, vomiting, cough, or breathing problems.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Since benzocaine topical is used as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are using the medication regularly, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of benzocaine topical applied to the skin can cause life-threatening side effects such as uneven heartbeats, seizure (convulsions), coma, slowed breathing, or respiratory failure (breathing stops).

What should I avoid while taking Benz-O-Sthetic (benzocaine topical)?

Avoid eating within 1 hour after using benzocaine topical on your gums or inside your mouth.

Benzocaine topical is for use only on the surface of your body, or just inside the mouth, vagina, or rectum. Avoid getting this medication in your eyes. Avoid swallowing the gel, liquid, or ointment while applying it to your gums or the inside of your mouth. The throat spray or oral lozenge may be swallowed gradually during use.

Do not apply other medications to the same affected areas you treat with benzocaine topical, unless your doctor has told you otherwise.

Benz-O-Sthetic (benzocaine topical) side effects

Benzocaine topical used in the mouth or throat may cause a life-threatening condition in which the amount of oxygen in your blood stream becomes dangerously low. This condition is called methemoglobinemia (met-HEEM-oh glo-bin-EE-mee-a) and it may occur after only one use of benzocaine or after several uses.

Signs and symptoms may occur within minutes or up to 2 hours after using benzocaine topical in the mouth or throat. GET EMERGENCY MEDICAL HELP IF YOU HAVE:

  • headache, tired feeling, confusion;

  • fast heart rate;

  • feeling light-headed or short of breath; and

  • pale, blue, or gray appearance of your skin, lips, or fingernails.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using benzocaine topical and call your doctor at once if you have any of these other serious side effects:

  • headache, weakness, dizziness, breathing problems, fast heart rate, and gray or bluish colored skin (rare but serious side effects of benzocaine);

  • severe burning, stinging, or sensitivity where the medicine is applied;

  • swelling, warmth, or redness; or

  • oozing, blistering, or any signs of infection.

Less serious side effects may include:

  • mild stinging, burning, or itching where the medicine is applied;

  • skin tenderness or redness; or

  • dry white flakes where the medicine was applied.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

What other drugs will affect Benz-O-Sthetic (benzocaine topical)?

It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on topically applied benzocaine topical. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.

Blephamide Suspension

Pronunciation: pred-NISS-oh-lone/sul-fa-SEE-ta-mide
Generic Name: Prednisolone/Sulfacetamide
Brand Name: Blephamide

Blephamide Suspension is used for:

Treating inflammation (swelling, warmth, redness, pain) of the eyes and eyelids when infection or risk of infection is present.

Blephamide Suspension is an antibacterial and corticosteroid combination. It works by reducing the itching, redness, and swelling of the eye. It also works to stop the growth of certain bacteria that cause eye infections.

Do NOT use Blephamide Suspension if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Blephamide Suspension, to other corticosteroids (eg, dexamethasone), or to other sulfonamides (eg, acetazolamide, celecoxib, hydrochlorothiazide, glyburide, probenecid, sulfamethoxazole, valdecoxib, zonisamide)

  • you have a viral eye infection (eg, herpes simplex, vaccinia, chickenpox), tuberculosis eye infection, or fungal infection of the eye or eye structures

  • you have thinning of the cornea of the eye

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Blephamide Suspension:

Some medical conditions may interact with Blephamide Suspension.

  • if you have thinning of the eye tissues (eg, cornea, sclera), other eye problems (eg, glaucoma, cataracts, nerve damage), severe dry eyes, or diabetes

  • if you have recently had cataract surgery

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Blephamide Suspension. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicine, especially any of the following:

  • Silver-containing medicines (eg, silver nitrate) because the risk of side effects may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Blephamide Suspension may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Blephamide Suspension:

Use Blephamide Suspension as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Shake well before each use.

  • To use Blephamide Suspension in the eye, first, wash your hands. Tilt your head back. Using your index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Drop the medicine into the pouch and gently close your eyes. Immediately use your finger to apply pressure to the inside corner of the eyelid for 1 to 2 minutes. Do not blink. Remove excess medicine around your eye with a clean, dry tissue, being careful not to touch your eye. Wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them.

  • To prevent germs from contaminating your medicine, do not touch the applicator tip to any surface, including the eye. Keep the container tightly closed.

  • To clear up your infection completely, use Blephamide Suspension for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days.

  • Do not use Blephamide Suspension if it is dark brown or has darkened since you began using it. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about whether you should use Blephamide Suspension.

  • Do not wear contact lenses while you are using Blephamide Suspension. Take care of your contact lenses as directed by the manufacturer. Check with your doctor before you use them.

  • If you miss a dose of Blephamide Suspension, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Blephamide Suspension.

Important safety information:

  • Blephamide Suspension may cause blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Blephamide Suspension with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.

  • If your symptoms do not get better within 2 days or if they get worse, check with your doctor.

  • Be sure to use Blephamide Suspension for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.

  • Long-term or repeated use of Blephamide Suspension may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.

  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Blephamide Suspension before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

  • Do not use Blephamide Suspension for future eye problems unless directed by your doctor.

  • Lab tests, including eye pressure, may be performed while you use Blephamide Suspension. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

  • Blephamide Suspension should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 6 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Blephamide Suspension while you are pregnant. It is not known if Blephamide Suspension is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while using Blephamide Suspension.

Possible side effects of Blephamide Suspension:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Temporary burning or stinging.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); changes in vision; eye pain, itching, redness, swelling, irritation, or sores not present when you began using Blephamide Suspension; fever, chills, or sore throat; red, swollen, or blistered skin; severe or persistent blurred vision; unusual tiredness or weakness; yellowing of the eyes or skin

This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your health care provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. To report side effects to the appropriate agency, please read the Guide to Reporting Problems to FDA.
