Pentetate Zinc Trisodium (Zn-DTPA) is used for:
Treating certain kinds of radiation contamination.
Pentetate Zinc Trisodium (Zn-DTPA) is a chelating agent. It works by removing certain radioactive chemicals from the body. This lowers the risk of possible future side effects, such as cancer, which may occur years after exposure.
Do NOT use Pentetate Zinc Trisodium (Zn-DTPA) if:

- Use a toilet instead of a urinal, and flush it several times after each use. Clean spilled urine or feces completely and wash your hands well. If blood or urine touches clothing or linens, wash them separately.
- If you are coughing, dispose of any mucus carefully. If possible, avoid swallowing mucus. Talk to your doctor if you are coughing.
- Parents or child caregivers - Be very careful in handling the urine, feces, and mucus of children to avoid any extra exposure to either you or the child.
- LAB TESTS, including complete blood cell counts, urinalysis, kidney function, and blood electrolyte and essential metal counts, will be required to monitor your progress before and during treatment. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor before using Pentetate Zinc Trisodium (Zn-DTPA). Women who have or may have been exposed to radioactive chemicals should not breast-feed, whether or not they are receiving this treatment with medicine. Take extra care in disposing of breast milk.
Possible side effects of Pentetate Zinc Trisodium (Zn-DTPA):
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Coughing; headache; lightheadedness; pelvic pain; wheezing.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).
